Map 6. Eastern Villages
The Eastern Villages are a key development area within the Borough with plans for 7,500 new homes by 2026.The countryside surrounding the development is a predominantly flat, open, agricultural land with a localised high point at Mount Pleasant Farm. The land starts to rise to the south of the site on the escarpment of the Downs, signalling a very obvious change in landscape character and the start of the North Wessex Downs AONB. The site includes a network of watercourses including the River Cole, its tributaries and associated flood plain areas. Important wildlife sites within the area include Nightingale Woods, a 52 hectare mixed deciduous, Forestry Commission woodland which is part of the Great Western Community Forest, and Brook Meadow, a designated lowland meadow through which the South Marston Brook runs.
Projects and initiatives which contribute to the landscape-scale conservation of priority habitats and species within the Swindon urban area can be found on the Delivery Projects in the Swindon Urban Area page of this website.
