It is now widely recognised that piecemeal conservation actions directed in isolated, well protected areas is not enough to prevent the further loss of biodiversity.
Conservation must be coordinated at a strategic, landscape-scale level if our priority habitats and species are to withstand the mounting pressures from population growth and climate change. In line with UK and international goals to halt biodiversity loss and establish a coherent, resilient network of priority habitats, a new Landscape Conservation Framework has been developed for Wiltshire and Swindon. This identifies 11 Landscape Biodiversity Areas across Wiltshire and Swindon, within which the best opportunities for protecting habitats and establishing environmental initiatives at the level of landscapes and ecosystems.
